Magical Mermaid Clear Embossed Underwater Scene

For today’s card I wanted to go for the mystery and mysticism that is evoked by stories of mermaids, to achieve that ‘glimpse’ I have used a really simple embossing technique on water-coloured paper.

I started with a 14.2 cm x 9.9 cm piece of watercolour paper and immersed it quickly and gently into a water bath. I then added a wash of Brusho Crystal Colour Prussian Blue and Moss Green (dilute a small amount of each Brusho crystal colour in seperate containers of water). While it was still wet I sprinkled a small amount of Prussian Blue over the blue area and Moss Green over the lower area. The watercolour paper has probably soaked up a lot of the water by this stage so a spritz of water over the sprinkled Brusho will continue the watery magic.

Once the background was dry I stamped the mermaid from the Magical Mermaid stamp set with Versamark and clear heat embossed her. Once she was set and cooled I took an aqua painter filled with clear water and washed over the stamped image. This has an amazing effect of lifting the colour away from the stamped image, only leaving the colour that is under the clear embossed areas. Truly magical!

Allow your elusive mermaid to dry before adding Clear Wink of Stella to her tail for a bit of shimmery sparkle. I have also given her a sparkly head band using a few strands of Copper Metallic Thread and a couple of pieces of Iridescent Sequins.

I decided that this mermaid was being very elusive and slipping off into the kelp beds. Using some Delightfully Detailed paper (the leaf one) that I had previously sprinkled Moss Green Brusho over and spritzed with clear water, I layered a few stems for her to duck behind. I then stamped the ‘sand’ image from the set in Versamark and Copper heat embossed along the lower edge. I decided to add a few small shells that I had recently collected on a family camping trip along the bottom of the card.

Stamping the sentiment from Magical Mermaid stamp set proved to be the most difficult part of this card and TBH I am not entirely happy with how it turned out, but I honestly can’t think how I could do it differently. This is one of the hardest aspects of living remote, I don’t have anyone close by to bounce ideas off, so if you have any suggestions I would LOVE to hear them! What I ended up doing was Copper heat embossing the sentiment directly onto the card and adding a strip of intricate cut Tranquil Tide card stock to balance everything. I then mounted this directly to the front of a Tranquil Tide card base and finished the inside with a stamped Whisper White insert.
